Weight Loss
The battle against obesity
As a nation are becoming fatter and unhealthier each year. In the 1980’s approximately 60% of Australians had a healthy weight and even higher in the in the decades preceding it. In 2018 the Australian institute of health and welfare (AIHW) reported that almost 2 out of 3 people in Australia are overweight or obese. This is a frightening statistic. Unfortunately, this statistic keeps rising and at this rate, obesity will become a national epidemic.
The link between obesity and disease
As obesity increases, so does the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, osteoarthritis, gout, fatty liver disease, kidney disease, metabolic syndrome, infertility and so on. It is unfortunate that we as a nation are headed in this direction, when all that is required is healthy food options and regular exercise. In Australia, most of us have the capacity to make the correct lifestyle choices in order to live a long and healthy life, without the risk of disease.
So many diets to choose from
With hundreds of diets out there, it is hard to differentiate which will work for you. I am sure many of you have tried a number of diet plans but how effective are they?
Reasons for weight gain
There are a number of reasons why people gain weight. These include:
– Over eating (gluttony)
– Unhealthy food choices
– Wrong diet for your genetics
– Genetics
– Insulin resistance
– Hormonal imbalances
– Certain Medications
– Leptin resistance (Leptins are hormones which you that you’ve eaten enough)
– Inflammatory type foods such as night shades and lectins.
– Eating at the wrong time
– A compromised gut
– Thyroid problems
– Polycystic ovarian syndrom (PCOS)
Calories in vs calories out
The theory about calories in vs calories out is not as accurate as you have been lead believe. Firstly not all calories are the same. Are 2000 calories of fast foods equivalent to 2000 calories of healthy whole foods? Do they have the same effect on the body? The answer is no. Also this is assuming that your gut is working optimally and you are absorbing all calories. Almost 100% of my clients have indigestion and as a result are not breaking down and absorbing their food efficiently. The result is expensive bowel movements.
